Welcome to Desert Sun Miniature American Shepherds (AKC and UKC's name for these wonderful dogs aka Mini Aussies) . I am a small hobby breeder, who has achieved Breeder of Merit status with the American Kennel Club aka AKC. I am located in beautiful Prescott, Arizona (1 1/2 hours North of Phoenix). My goal is to produce Miniature American Shepherds of correct type, sound structure, and great temperaments.
All my dogs are health tested prior to being bred. They will have their hips evaluated by OFA or Penn-Hip, and their eyes cleared by a Canine Ophthalmologist . I also test my dogs for MDR-1, PRCD, DM, CEA, and Hereditary Cataracts.
I only have a couple of dogs that live with me, so I do not have litters all year round. Desert Sun puppies are whelped inside my home. Each puppy will be socialized, healthy, and eager to meet their new family. I am proud to say I raise my litters following the Puppy Culture method. All puppies will receive their appropriate vaccinations and have a genetic health guarantee, as well as being registered with AKC and/or UKC. I have safely shipped puppies by air after they are 8 weeks old. Shipping is at the new puppy owner's expense. Some of the places Desert Sun puppies have flown to are: California, Utah, Pennsylvania, Nebraska, Washington, Texas, Connecticut, Massachusetts, New
York, Oregon, Idaho, Indiana, and even Canada.
My companion puppies will be sold under a spay / neuter contract only. I reserve the right to place my puppies into suitable homes.
Why My Dogs Are Called Miniature American Shepherds
I have chosen to take my dogs AKC/UKC and call them Miniature American Shepherds. In Arizona, AKC offers many events for people and their dogs to compete in, which are not available to the Miniature Australian Shepherd that is only recognized as a rare breed. (Please see my About Minis page for more information).
This does not change what my dogs are. I grew up with Australian Shepherds. I feel it is very important that my Minis have the same temperament and structure as the Australian Shepherd, just in a smaller package. All my dogs are bred down from Australian Shepherds and carry many well known Australian Shepherds Kennel names such as Briarbrook, Propwash, Bayshore, Heatherhill, Mill Creek, Carolina, Calais, McMatt, Brigadoon, and Taycin.
